President considered that his club was "better than other alternatives and that he was willing to organize the G7 there at no cost to the US"
Trump didn't understand controversy in choosing G7 summit headquarters, says aide
US President Donald Trump was surprised by the negative repercussions of his desire to celebrate the upcoming G7 leaders' summit at one of his golf clubs, as he "thinks he is still in the hotel business," said the White House on Sunday.
White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney tried to explain what led the former real estate mogul to choose his golf club in Miami, Florida, to host next year's G7 annual summit and announce three days after the meeting would be held in another US location.

"He was truly surprised at the degree of controversy generated by the choice of Trump National Doral," Mulvaney said in an interview with Fox News Sunday.
"Anyway, (Trump) goes on considering he's in the hotel business, and saw an opportunity to welcome the world's top leaders, and wanted to organize the best show possible, the best visit he could, and the idea of doing so in Doral made him very confident, "he added.

Asked if the office of president of the republic was compatible with that of businessman, Mulvaney replied that everyone has previous experience, and that Trump "is in the hotel business, or at least was".
Yesterday, the president announced on Twitter that he was retreating from his plan to hold the G7 meeting at his club due to "hysterical and irrational hostility from Democrats and the press."
