Crowds gathered in Baghdad for a funeral procession for Iran's elite Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani, Iraqi militia chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and other people killed in a drone air strike on Friday.
Lamentations and supporters of Maj. Gen. Soleimani and al-Muhandis, deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), are holding photos of both, along with Iraqi flags and the Shiite Hezbollah group. Many are dressed in black and are heard singing "Death to America."
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi is also present at the ceremony. He stepped down in November amid mass protests against the government but retained his role in interim capacity.
The procession carrying the coffins of Soleimani and al-Muhandis, which are covered with Iranian and Iraqi flags, respectively, moved from Kadhimiya, a Shiite pilgrimage site in Baghdad, to the Green Zone government bloc for the state funeral. .
Soleimani's remains are expected to be transported to Iran, where a burial will take place in his hometown of Kerman on Sunday.
The two men were killed at Baghdad airport as they were about to drive to the Iraqi capital. Washington said that by killing Soleimani, future Iranian attacks on the US military and civilians in Iraq and elsewhere were prevented.
