Brazilian surfer Italo Ferreira, 25, was runner-up in France's World Surfing League (WSL) stage and warmed up for the two Olympic spots to which the country will be entitled at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Defeated by Frenchman Jeremy Flores in the decision in Hossegor, the athlete from Rio Grande do Norte climbed from fifth to fourth place in the season standings.
Italo now has 42,400 points behind South African Jordy Smith (43,515) and compatriots Filipe Toledo (45,730) and Gabriel Medina (48,015).
Medina did not repeat the good performance that usually has in France (accumulates three titles and two vices in Hossegor) and stopped in the round of 16. Filipe Toledo, who was still recovering from a lower back injury, was eliminated in the previous phase.
With the runner-up, Italo narrowed the gap for the two in the race for Brazilian vacancies in Japan.
There are two stages left until the end of the 2019 season. The next will be in Peniche (Portugal), from October 16th to 28th. Pipeline (Hawaii) closes disputes December 8-20.
