Halle Berry refuses opportunity to play trans man after criticism

by Ace Damon

During an interview with hairdresser Christin Brown on an Instagram live, Halle Berry expressed her interest in playing a trans man to “understand this world.”

However, the star has been severely criticized by the public, even though she is an advocate of the LGBTQ community.

According to Deadline, some personalities also alerted the actress, saying that authenticity and representation on the screen are paramount, suggesting that the role should be played by a real trans.

Sam Feder, director of the documentary ‘Disclosure’, which chronicles the daily lives of trans people in the media, said:

“Often people don’t really know what they don’t know, unless they are experiencing what is shown on the screen. And that’s fine! Halle Berry, please consider watching the ‘Disclosure’ documentary before accepting a role like this. ”

Actress Jamie Clayton (‘Sense 8’), who is also trans, reinforced Feder’s comment and added:

“Halle Berry… Please fight for us, not against us. Trans is beautiful. ”

After all the controversy, Berry went to Twitter to recant, apologize to the trans community and say he was no longer considering the role.

“Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to discuss my desire to play a trans man and I would like to apologize for what I said. As a cisgender (straight) woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories. ”

She continued:

“I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation I have had in the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I intend to be an ally and use my voice to promote better representation on the screen, both in front and behind the cameras. ”

After the apology, GLAAD, an organization that monitors LGBTQ representation in the media, applauded the actress’s attitude:

“We are pleased that Halle Berry has heard and learned from transgender concerns. Other influential people should do the same. ”

It is worth remembering that Berry will star in the science fiction ‘Moonfall’, the new disaster film by director Roland Emmerich (‘Independence Day’).

The actress will play a NASA astronaut whose last mission reveals a clue to an impending catastrophe.

Still without much details, the narrative will focus on the moment when the Moon is pushed out of its orbit by a mysterious force and enters a collision course with Earth. Life as we know it is in the hands of a team of experts who embark on an impossible mission and have only a few weeks to save everyone.

Filming is expected to start in September this year, but there is no preview yet.

As the project is still in its initial stages, new information should be released soon.
