The opening takes place on the eve of the 70th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The first flight was to Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, according to local media.
Built at the southern end of the city, Beijing Daxing International Airport was built in less than five years and is designed to handle 72 million passengers a year.
Total investment, including terminal, high-speed station, roads and infrastructure around the airport, amounts to 400 billion yuan (52.5 billion euros).
The main airport of the Chinese capital, located in the north of the city, is the second busiest in the world and the passenger volume is close to its capacity limit. In 2018, for the first time, it exceeded 100 million annual passengers.
With five floors and a combined area of 103 square kilometers, Daxing Airport is also the first to incorporate two floors dedicated exclusively to passenger arrivals – one for domestic flights and one for international flights – and the other two for departures.
It is also the first airport in the world to house a high speed train station below its surface.
The late British Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid designed the airport, which is shaped like a phoenix.
The airport is about 45 kilometers from central Beijing.
