Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the president of Brazil, used a manipulated photo to attack Greta Thunberg. Two days later, the putative Brazilian ambassador to the US says it was a joke and blames the press.
A photograph of Greta Thunberg, sitting eating before the greedy gaze of black children across the window, was used by Jair Bolsonaro's son Eduardo to attack the young Swedish activist on Twitter.
"You stole my childhood …" said the George Soros Open Society-funded girl, wrote Eduardo Bolsonaro. The Tweet is illustrated by a manipulated photo of Greta Thunberg.
The true picture was posted on Greta's Twitter on January 22 during a train ride in Denmark.
Eduardo Bolsonaro used the manipulated photo to associate Greta with the Open Society, a network of foundations of billionaire George Soros that supports civil society movements around the world, with an emphasis on education, media independence, health and justice.
An association that lacks confirmation but has become "true" in the virtual world at the expense of other manipulation. In this case, Greta's image with Soros was made from a photograph of the young Swede with former US Vice President Al Gore, who for years has been one of the most mediatic faces in the climate struggle.
Two days later, Eduardo Bolsonaro returns to the subject, in a record already seen in his father and Donald Trump. "We always have to remember how dirty and selective the press is," says that Brazilian federal deputy, in a Tweet published this Saturday afternoon, suggesting that the photo was a "meme", a humor image used on the Internet.
To justify the meme, Eduardo Bolsonaro uses another manipulation of the same image, with former Supreme Court Judge Gilmar Mendes in place of Greta, threatened with a gun by former Attorney General Rodrigo Janot
A joke that illustrates a recent confession by Rodrigo Janot. In an interview about the launch of a book, the former attorney general of the Republic of Brazil says that he even entered armed with the Supreme Court to kill Judge Gilmar Mendes and commit suicide.
