I have been doing exercise five days a week for over 25 years.
My legs and arms are solid, but it didn’t happen overnight.
I didn’t jog for a few weeks or months, and then I stopped. I had to do running a habit if I wanted to get the results I have continuously.
The same is true for healthy eating. You will never be healthy, eating healthy foods occasionally.
You must make healthy eating a habit if you want to achieve nutritional health. People get on the healthy eating trend by reading books or visiting websites that talk about nutrition.
While many of these books and websites tell you what to eat to be healthy, they do not teach you how to make healthy eating a habit. So, in a short period, when temptations come, people return to their old unhealthy eating habits.
What is a habit? According to Webster’s dictionary, a habit is “a pattern of behavior acquired through frequent repetition or physiological exposure that is shown with regularity or greater ease of performance.”
Can you see that if we apply this principle to healthy eating, we will be on the road to vibrant health?
Bad eating habits: Bad eating habits do not develop overnight.
For most people, these habits started to form when they were children. So, one of the reasons why many adults have a hard time breaking their bad eating habits is that these habits have been part of their lifestyle for many years.
Why do we eat food? There are two main reasons why we eat. One is to provide fuel for our bodies. The other reason is pleasure. Unfortunately, some of the foods that give us pleasure are not healthy.
Most people make their food selections based on what they see, smell, or taste.
Look at these three phrases:
This pie looks good! This pie smells good! This pie certainly tastes good!
Note that all three statements involve food and pleasure. However, the food that is producing the pleasure (in this case, the pie) may or may not be nutritionally suitable for you.
That is why we need to be wise in our food selections and not simply leave it to our senses of sight, taste, or smell. Eating healthily can be enjoyable: Some people consider healthy eating tasteless.
I think one of the reasons they feel this way is because most of the commercials we see promote foods high in calories, fat, or sugar, and only a small percentage of food advertising is for fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans.
Thus, if there were more nutritional education, more and more people would consider healthy eating to be pleasurable and tasty. How healthy eating habits changed my life: In 1998, my wife finally convinced me to go to the doctor for a check-up.
I wasn’t feeling bad, but she clearly said it was a good idea to have an annual physical exam. Thank goodness, I heard it. I have been athletic all my life.
I run 18 miles a week. So, when I went to the doctor, I didn’t expect to hear the bad news he gave me. He told me that I had borderline diabetes.
Diabetes can be very dangerous if left untreated. It is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. It is a disease of the pancreas that stops the body from producing the insulin it needs to regulate blood sugar.
My doctor told me that I didn’t need to be medicated. However, he suggested that I start reading some books on healthy eating. That was the beginning of my path to healthy eating habits that changed my health situation. Today I can honestly say that I am in excellent health.
I feel good; I sleep well, people tell me I’m not my age, I maintain a healthy weight, I don’t take any medication, my blood pressure is normal, my blood sugar is regular, my cholesterol is normal, my immune system is healthy, and the list goes on.
It is terrific to be in good health, and I thank God for that. However, I do not believe that I am healthy because of chance. I firmly believe that one of the main reasons for my health is that I take personal responsibility for my health. Making healthy eating a habit is an excellent part of that responsibility.
Our physical bodies have laws that are governed by proper nutrition. If we violate these laws, consistently eating unhealthy foods, we will be sick.
Following a nutritious diet while traveling can be one of the most challenging things to do. However, if you learn to make smart choices, a healthy diet will not be that difficult.
It is probably not the best time to start a nutritious diet, but if you are already making healthy choices in your foods, slightly modifying your diet to accommodate travel is not as difficult as it may seem at first.
If you are traveling by plane, your diet may include plane foods, which can often have low nutritional value, depending on your selection.
When booking your flight, ask about your food options, ask if a vegetarian dish is available? Vegetarian dishes are sometimes more nutritious in this case, but it depends on what they may be serving.
If you can, eat a bigger meal before the flight, so you don’t have to eat the whole meal served to feel satisfied.
When driving or taking a bus, you may be tempted to stop at fast-food restaurants and eat whatever meals you find there. Avoid this whenever possible!
If you’re on vacation, you may want to spend a little more, but eating fast food more than once a week can be bad for your health.
If necessary, choose the healthiest options available, such as chicken breast and diet soda. Also, remember that you can have your meals while traveling.
Carrying whole-wheat bread or pita wraps, some lean meat, and low-fat cheese in a refrigerator is a great way to avoid high-fat, high-cholesterol meals.
These are much better choices, and you will also save a lot of money. Call ahead to ask if there will be a refrigerator in your hotel room.
Finally, make smart choices when eating out. If you choose salads or pasta, leave the dressing aside and ask about low-carb options. Many places print these diet options directly on the menu for health-conscious people.
Control your portions by ordering lunch menu sizes or dividing the meal into food and getting a dog bag, and you will be on the right path for healthy eating, even outside the home.
Yes, eating healthy food while traveling can be challenging. However, your health is worth it. Eating meals rich in nutrition will also help fight diseases that you are likely to encounter while traveling, and you will be more alert so that you can enjoy the trip.
